The Wainstones are a collection of stones in the North York Moors. The Wainstones are popular among rock climbers – it is rock climbing with a view as the Wainstones boast panoramic views of the surrounding heather moorland. You can see Roseberry Topping and Captain Cook’s Monument in the distance.
This 8-mile walk ventures across the moorland and passes through the Wainstones.

The car park for the Wainstones route is

Parking is £2 for the full day and can be paid by cash or card. There are toilets at the car park. There are no facilities on the route.
Start of the Wainstones Walk
Venture out of the Chop Gate Village Hall carpark and turn left onto the main road.
Turn left, following the road signs for Carlton in Cleveland.
Turn right shortly after. Continue along the path passed the church.
Take the less obvious path leading to the right.
Continue along the joining paths.
Continue straight ahead at the cross section.
Continue straight ahead again.
Continue ahead.
At the end of the path, turn right.
You will have amazing views over Cleveland. Roseberry Topping can be seen in the distance.
The Wainstones can be seen from here.
Take the path leading through the wainstones. Small sections require a bit of scrambling.
Follow the signpost for “Cleveland Way”. It is the route on the right, next to the stone wall.
Cross the road and continue following the Cleveland Way.
Turn right, coming off the Cleveland Way and following the signpost for “Bridleway”.
This section can become boggy. There are blue arrows marking the route.
Continue straight ahead.
Turn right at the signpost.
Continue straight ahead, following the grassed route.
Continue through the gate and turn left onto tarmac path.
Turn left onto the main road.
The road leads back to the Chop Gate Village Hall Car Park.
